Ending to a Sticky Situation
Websterville,
Vermont, February 26, 2000 -- Highland Sugarworks is pleased
to announce that Aurora Foods of San Francisco have withdrawn all
infringement threats against it. In a letter from their Washington,
D.C. attorneys dated February 23, 2000, Aurora unconditionally dropped
all demands on Vermont company Highland Sugarworks
So "cabin
fever" is over and we're back to doing what we do best, sugarin'.
After three weeks of communication, Aurora concluded there had never
been any infringement of their Log Cabin(TM); breakfast syrup
trademark by pure Vermont maple syrup maker and distributor Highland
Sugarworks. This alleged "infringement" was based on a comparison
between a plastic bottle with the outline of a cabin filled with
Log Cabin(TM); brand syrup and a cabin-shaped glass container
fillled with pure maple syrup distributed by Highland Sugarworks.
Highland co-owner
Judy MacIsaac says she is quite relieved. "We were confident
all along that there was no wrongdoing on our part, but the economics
of the situation were potentially devastating." MacIsaac says
Highland staff will wrok hard to absorb the legal expenses and make
up for a February that was down in sales, due to the need for management
to attend to the threat by Aurora.
Highland Sugarworks
is grateful for the support they received from the entire Vermont
community. "Being on the receiving end of such generous support
from our community was an incredible experience. We are truly very
fortunate to live in the state of Vermont," said MacIsaac.
Highland Sugarworks,
founded in 1986, is owned by Judy and Jim MacIsaac. They produce
and distribute pure maple syrup, all-natural pancake mixes, honey
and maple specialties. On a farm in Starksboro, Vermont, the MacIsaac
family run a 7,500-tap sugaring operation; the company is based
in Websterville. Highland Sugarworks is the state's third largest
maple syrup packer. They work diligently to protect Vermont's maple
industry and Vermont's specialty food industry. Highland's was recognized
as the "best tasting" maple syrup available by Cook's
Illustrated magazine. |
